My Rigging and Animation tools within a character pipeline.

Character Pipeline from juan carlos leon on Vimeo.

IK/Fk tool

My IK/FK switcher tool works with my Biped rig. It essentially a space switch tool.
When working with either FK or IK, it finds the worldspace of one system and transfer that information onto the other system. it then keys all animation controls so that the animator can continue to animate in either IK or FK

Transfer Animation Tool

This tool will take any motion capture data and transfer its motion onto our existing rig. It then bakes all animation onto our mocap nodes. and Keeps all controls open for any additional layered animation.

Biped Auto Rigger Tool

My Biped Auto Rig tool creates a full functioning rig based off the skeleton that was generated from the skeleton generator tool. The rig has a full Inverse and Kinematic system plus additions control layers for adding motion on top of animated controls. The rig has a stretch function on all limbs/roll joints for better deformation. space switching capabilities/ eye and hand controls and more controls based off animators needs. The tool has been a work in progress for about a year and a half now.

below are some character examples:

demo reel 2011

This is my collection of work as a character rigger and technical artist. Demo reel includes 4 different projects.

1. Call of Juarez "the cartel"
this was a minute long video game trailer in which i worked with a small team of riggers to come up with a way to have one rig that can be used for motion capture and one rig to control fingers and additional animation. the main goal was to only have one rig that blends from both motion capture and animation. I also worked on some cloth dynamics. I used n cloth as well as some additional scripts that would allow the mesh to move like real cloth.

once we had the rigs complete, it was our job to set up the scenes with the rigs referenced. we would integrate the motion capture data onto the rigs and hand them to the animator for additional animation.

2. Intel "walter"

this was a rig i created that was originally a quadruped.
once we realized that the sloth character was going to be standing on 2 feet, i adjusted the rig for that. i added facial features but they were not needed.

3. Shamrock Farms "dairy fairy"
This was a biped rig i rigged, using part of an auto rig. from there i built on top of it. adding wing controls tut controls and facial controls.

4. Nickelodeon's Pet Pet Park
i was a technical artist for 2 years working on pet pet park.
my tasks included working between the programmers and artists. i would take the original artwork for a zone, cut it up in a game engine, from there i would create a grid in which the avatar can walk on.

depending on the artwork the engine allowed me to build ramps that the avatar can walk one. each tile had the opportunity to carry code data. certain characters would have default chat dialogue or would send you to quests.
This worked by adding linkages to xml code.
i would integrate rollover animations, game entities exits and entrances to new zones.

Technical Artist at Nickelodeon

my work as a technical artist at nickelodeon.
The video shows the different tasks to handle in order for the game to be played online.
I go through building the game maps, to setting tiles for animation rollovers, games, or entrances to other zones.
I work with xml code throughout the process, setting up anything that needs to be triggered, at the end, you have a functional game maps where characters can walk in the areas you've designed based off the artwork provided.

T Wiz

during the month of Feb 2010, i worked on a new rig by the name of T-Wiz.
these are some of the images used in creating a proper rig.
Starting with corrected character movement for the rig.A good animator will give you
reference on how the model should react. From there you develop the true nature of the model.

Neo Pets Key Quest

Demo_Reel_Update _7_7_9 from juan carlos leon on Vimeo.

I was the lead rigger on the Neopets Key Quest series. There was a variety of rig set ups, from biped to quadraped creatures.Creatures with armor or wings that also needed set ups.
there was 114 total rigs created for 9 series. many rig set ups carried a variety of models to work along the animations. All characters required facial rig sets ups to carry many emotions. The characters were set up for an online game.

Old Man

I wanted to start off with a basic biped rig, The old man rig.
He was given to me to rig for my demo reel. he was supppose to be laying on a chair get up and walk around.
on this rig, i wanted it to carry a nice facial set up. allowing the animator to make the character blink, open his mouth in many ways, have a tounge set up,eyebrow and sagging cheeks controls. It carries a IK/FK leg and arm set up.The spine is built in Fk.

When i start most of my rigs, i like to draw out the joint placement.
that way i can see what works or what does not.
